Set against the backdrop of a war on the northern frontier of the Great Sheng dynasty, the story begins as the Canglang King invades with an army of eighty thousand cavalry. General Gu Shan He leads only five thousand infantry into battle, leaving his forces trapped in a seemingly hopeless situation. Veteran commander Tie Xiang Quan refuses to provide assistance, while the military supervisor Wang Hui Yue secretly collaborates with the enemy and frames loyal officers and soldiers. In the original course of events, Gu Shan He's entire army is annihilated, bringing ruin upon his family as well.
Shen Wen Yuan, the Grand Historian, is condemned for speaking out against this injustice. On the eve of his execution, he uses the power of a historical chronicle to travel back in time to the days before the tragedy unfolds. Determined to change history, he warns Gu Shan He of the coming disaster and remains in the army as his strategist. Together, they devise plans to break through the siege, launch surprise attacks on the enemy's supply lines, and restore the soldiers' morale.
